Kansas constitutes the Arkansas Darter’s primary range. The darter’s range extends into eastern Colorado, southwestern Missouri, northeastern Arkansas and northcentral Oklahoma where local populations occur. Viable populations of Arkansas Darters are currently known only in suitable streams south of the Arkansas River in southcentral Kansas and in Spring River drainage in Cherokee County. Because of its specialized habitat requirements, this darter is localized within its range but may be quite common where it does occur. The fish are almost invariably associated with vegetative cover in spring-fed channels and generally are found in near-shore areas away from swift currents. During spawning, males are a colorful orange along their lower abdomen.Īrkansas Darters prefer shallow, clear, spring-fed tributary and headwater streams having sand or sandy-gravel substrates. They are olivaceous brown above and yellowish white below with six to nine indistinct dusky saddles over the back. Reaching a maximum size of 2.5 inches, the Arkansas Darter is a stout-bodied member of the perch family.

The story primarily concerns human relationships and their tenuous and problematic qualities by deploying the concept of technological immortality, in which one's consciousness is separated from the body and "uploaded" into a supercomputer, where it continues to think and function on its own. When the story was written, the retrofit was recent, and I dirtied it up for requisite punky near-future effect." As the author commented in a 2007 blog post: "Vancouver's Granville Island, centered around Granville Island Market (produce and food fair) is a very successful (and pleasant) retrofit of an under-bridge urban island that previously was heavily industrial. The market of the title was modelled on that of Granville Island, though in a state of bohemian decay. The story was commissioned in 1985 by Vancouver Magazine, who stipulated that Gibson – who at the time was "unquestionably the leading Vancouver author on the international literary scene" – set it in the city (thereby making it unique among the author's works). " The Winter Market" is a science fiction short story written by William Gibson and published as part of his Burning Chrome short story collection. Reading a John Irving is like moving through a kaleidoscope of brightly coloured dreams. John Irving takes big themes (abortion, religion, suicide, class, the aftermath of wars) and explores them through extraordinary characters and almost lyrical language. John Irving and John Updike are very different novelists. There was a time in my life when my reading would consist of an Updike novel, followed by a John Irving novel 3, followed by an Updike novel, ad infinitum or, at least, for most people, ad nauseam. Having previously read, at various times, the first three Rabbit books, I suggested Rabbit at Rest, the fourth in the teratology and my colleagues agreed. One of our members, another John, suggested that we should read an Updike. John Updike died, earlier this year, just short of his 77 th birthday. John’s request to join any of the three was met with a succession of vetos on the ground that he was not a woman. My friend, John’s wife, Margaret, is a member of three book groups. She also had the chance to see the filming first-hand: “My husband, my little girl, and I spent a lot of time on set. It’s just wild.”Īs was the case with Everything, Everything, Yoon contributed ideas, script notes, and general input on the film. Back then I would never have believed that I’d get my dream of becoming a working writer and that there would be movie versions of my books. Five years ago, I spent my days at a job that absolutely sucked the soul from my body. “It feels surreal and wonderful at the same time. The last couple of years, Yoon told PW, have been life-changing. In Yoon’s case, lightning has struck twice: her 2015 debut novel, Everything, Everything (Delacorte) was adapted to the screen in 2017. Having a novel adapted into a movie is a rare accomplishment for any author, and many books optioned for film never get the green light. An irresistible story from Kasie West that explores the timeless question: What do you do when you fall for the person you least expect? The eponymous story is one of the most poignant in the collection. These are not tales of heroic actions and selfless dedication to the war effort. And although the stories retain an upper-middle class gentility, Panter Downes doesn’t shy away from exploring the baser side of human nature and behavior. The factual details Panter-Downes includes about wartime life certainly do provide the framework for each of these stories but they are ultimately there in service of exploring more universal truths. Panter-Downes manages to write social history in the guise of fiction but does so in a way that one never feels like one is learning a lesson. Some of that output included these 21 short stories about life in England during World War II. Mollie Panter-Downes was a correspondent for The New Yorker, writing over 852 pieces between 19. I got over my recent reading slump but I think I may have traded it for a reviewing slump. Writing a review that doesn’t bore the pants off of one’s readers sometimes feels as insurmountably arduous and impossible as writing the book itself. Author Interview: C.D. The idea of recasting the Greek classics began with the ancients themselves Virgil’s “Aeneid” is, in many ways, both a rewriting of and a commentary on the Homeric epics. To the long catalog of odd hybrids that inhabit Greek myth - the half-human, half-equine centaurs, the birdlike Harpies with their human faces, the man-eating Scylla with her doglike nether parts - we may now add Madeline Miller’s first novel, “The Song of Achilles.” In it, Miller has taken on an (appropriately) heroic task: to fashion a modern work of literature out of very ancient stories - specifically, the tale of the Greeks at Troy, one of the oldest and most seminal of all legends in the Western tradition. |
